Truly Sacred Mountain

in #photofeed7 years ago

This spectacular peak in the Himalayas is called Machapuchare, also known as “Fish Tail Mountain” elevation: 6,993 m. It is revered by the local population as particularly sacred to the god Shiva, and hence is off limits to climbing.

In 1957, one Wilfrid Noyce, who came the closest anybody ever has to the summit on a 1957 expedition. The king of Nepal had asked Noyce to respect Hindu religious customs and not set foot on the summit. He and A.D.M. Cox, turned back 150 feet from the summit.
