Colonia del Sacramento

in #photofeed6 years ago (edited)

Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese and due to its strategic position across the river from Buenos Aires soon became a smuggling port for pirates. Its sovereignty was contested over the passing centuries and the city changed hands several times between Spain and Portugal. The streets of the Barrio Histórico or historic quarter maintin a lot of the charm of this bygone era. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Interesting story . At the moment who belongs?

Uruguay is an independent country now.

You can smoke weed everywhere there too. Take that in count.

Colonial history in South America is so interesting. I have listened to some interesting postcasts on the many revolutions. Not a part of history that is given much attention in US schools. Great photo. Love the cobblestone. Where haven't you been?

Ha. The world is a big place. So I have not been to most places ;-)

Do you listen to the Mike Duncan Revolutions podcast?

I do and I love it!

I have started recently. Up to partway though the french revolution. I am a big Dan Carlin but his productions are more like major miniseries and take a long time to come out so the Revolutions podcast fills a nice gap there while I wait.

Dan Carlin is the godfather of history podcasts

Indeed he is. What a legend.

Damn must've missed this one. I was in Buenos Aires for over a month!

Yes it is a short trip in a ferry over the mouth of the river (quite a large river but river none the less).
