Great write-up.
What are your thoughts on photographs winning these prizes when it's someone who's mainly just in the right place at the right time? Like with the Charlottesville photo?

Sort:

If you're not in the right place at the right time you wouldn't get the shot! Even if it were someone that has never picked up a camera, literally lifted the camera up and said "what does this button do?" as they pressed the shutter and got a shot like any of the above images has as much right to win the award as someone that sleeps with a camera in their hand and actively seeks out human tragedies.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. Your level of dedication to photography doesn't necessarily determine how good a picture you take is.

Is it a good picture though? I agree that it's an interesting subject but there's little that makes it good other than an interesting subject. Just because someone has a beautiful model in their portrait does not mean it's a good photo right?

Also I didn't realize that it won the "breaking news photography" award, which makes total sense to me now.

Yeah, totally agree. I think the category is really important in this case! In general I agree about just taking a picture of something pretty, but in this case "right place right time" is by default gonna be an important factor.
