Hidden Gem: Cave Adventure at Pecos River Bridge Texas
I love discovering places that few have traveled to, and these “hidden gems” are among some of my favorite memories.
Reflecting back on our time road tripping across the country in our motorhome there, there is an adventure that came to mind that I wanted to share with you.
In western Texas (USA), if you are traveling on Highway 90 between Del Rio and Langtry, you will find yourself crossing a 1,310-foot long bridge 273 feet above the Pecos River. This bridge has a deep, rich history with roots steeming to the building of the nation’s first southern transcontinental railroad and might just be the most famous and well known historical bridges in Texas. The breathtaking views will urge you to stop and take it all in, and you can do just that by staying at the pull-offs provided on either side of the road.
But for those souls with adventure in their heart, there is more than meets the eye in this seemingly typical scenic overlook.
During the first visit, we climbed down the steep mountainside to get a close look at the river and see the bridge from a different angle.
Other than the pull-off from the main road, there is a hidden entrance to the Pecos River High Bridge Overlook. It's easy to miss, especially if you are passing by at night.
The views from the top are spectacular. And overnight parking is allowed, I highly recommend it. First, because the night sky is packed full of stars that are brighter than I have ever seen before.
And second, if you do the Cave Adventure you will be exhausted, driving will be the last thing you’ll want to do!
Pecos River Cave Adventure.
There are only two ways to access the Cave. 1. Rock Climbing Gear or 2. by water.
This is where our inflatable paddle boats came in handy! The best way to enter the water is from the Pecos River Boat Launch.
I feel like these pictures won't do it justice. When you are paddling along on the water with colossal canyon gorges towering on either side, it makes you feel so small in a big, big world!
When you've reached the coordinates, the climb up the canyon wall begins...
It's a challenging and steep climb up, but don't forget to take breaks.
and take in the view...
The cave entrance can't be missed, it's HUGE!
And the further you go inside, the bigger it seems to get!
We explored every inch!
and, of course, so did Link (our pup)!
If you find yourself traveling down this seldom traveled road, at least pause to take in the natural beauty around you and if you have the time - go on a cave adventure!
