A Moment In History! Childhood Home And Farm Of Jimmy Carter! Part Two!

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

This is the second post on the farm that President Jimmy Carter was raised on. I could not put the pictures and everything in one post as it would have made for a very long post so I divided it into two posts. This is part two of the post.

This was his bedroom growing up as a child. If you look at the side of the bed in the picture you can see that at some point there was no indoor plumbing in the house as there is what they called a "chamber pot" beside the bed! I know this because of my grandmother, so had very little indoor plumbing as I was growing up and when we stayed at her house we still took showers behind the pumphouse with a hose in the summer and in the wintertime we heated water on the stove and used a foot tub or a No.2 washtub to get a bath in. There was still an outhouse on her property that was used.

As indoor plumbing came into the house this was the shower they used. They opened the valve on the wall and water went into the bucket and it had holes in the bottom to make a showerhead. I am sure it woke you up in the morning!

This is the living room in the house! A nice warm fire to read and study by in the wintertime. There were two of these fireplaces in the house, the other one was in his parent's room and of course the wood stove in the kitchen. This would have kept the house nice and warm in the wintertime.

This is the store that was owned by his father and was also on the property that he grew up on and he also helped run the store which helped support the family. In those days there was one of the stores for the whole community in that area.

I think the is a pot that syrup was made in from the sugar cane that was grown on the property. You crushed the cane and boiled the liquid to get out the water and thicken it to the sugar syrup and/or made sugar from the sugar cane.

This is what they used to plow the fields the with and also to cut the grass, they were pulled by mules or horses. Which they had to build barns to keep them in and also cut hay to feed them in the wintertime.

They had a blacksmith shop on the property to maintain the plow blades and sharpen blades and make horseshoes for the horses and/or mules. Making all their own tools and knives was a task into itself let alone all the other stuff they had to keep up with. I am sure there was a smokehouse somewhere on the property to smoke meats so they could be stored and not ruin.

We look at this way of life now and think to ourselves this was a hard life, to us it would be with all the technology we have today. A stop by the grocery store and we just pick up what we need and put it in a freezer or a refrigerator. Then it was a way of life and they did not know anything but doing it that way and things progressed slowly and it was a simpler life then, not an easy life but simple. Going back to those times from where we are today it would seen it would be impossible. Many are trying to get away from all the things we have today by growing and raising their own food and doing things much the way it was done back then. A simpler more fulfilling way of life of quiet nights around the fireplace or the stove and just enjoying family. Putting together the way of life then and now, to a point, without all the drama!

I encourage each and everyone here to get out and look at the world around you and see what there is out there from our past and study it and maybe adapt some of that way of life to your lives today and enjoy some family time without the tv and the internet, just talk to each other, I think we would all benefit from this. Have some quiet time to reflect on how easy it is for us now in this modern age. Thanks for reading and I hope everyone has a great day/night, whatever it is in your part of the world!
