Puning & Shantou - A visit / Ein Besuch

After I had packed up in Shaoguan, I had not yet found a new job. So, because I didn't know when or whether I would come to Canton again, I went to visit my then-girlfriend in her hometown & then go traveling a bit with her. Her hometown was the world-renowned megacity of Puning in East Canton.	Nachdem ich in Shaoguan alles zusammengepackt hatte, war ich immer noch arbeitslos. Da ich nicht wußte, ob & wann ich nochmal nach Kanton kommen würde, fuhr ich in die Heimatstadt meiner damaligen Freundin, um sie zu besuchen & um danach mit ihr ein bißchen zu reisen. Ihr Heimatort war die weltbekannte Megacity Puning in Ost-Kanton.

According to Wikipedia, it actually has 2 million inhabitants, but - well - that's just the way they count in China. Puning itself was (& still is, though there seems to have been some development) just a town. Back in 2007 it didn't even have a train station, IIRC. Therefore I had to take the sleeper bus to get there from Shaoguan. This being China long before the Wuhan virus, on the bus, every inch was used:

Wikipedia behauptet, sie hätte 2 Mio. Einwohner, aber das ist die chinesische Zählweise. Das eigentliche Puning war (& ist, auch wenn es sich etwas entwickelt hat) eine Kleinstadt. 2007 gab es noch nicht mal einen Bahnhof. Daher mußte ich von Shaoguan aus den Nightliner nehmen. Wie das in China lange vor dem Wuhanvirus war, wurde im Bus jeder Zentimeter mit Passagieren gefüllt:

That was a bicycle riksha, if you haven't recognised it. Back then it was one of the most common taxi services in Puning. Puning was one of the poorer towns in Canton. Before I went there, my girlfriend had actually warned me not to use my phone out in the open, because it was so common for thieves to just snatch phones.	Das war eine Fahrradrikscha (für diejenigen, denen das fremd ist). Damals war das einer der häufigsten Taxidienste in Puning. Dieses war eine der ärmeren Städte in Kanton. Bevor ich hinfuhr, hatte meine Freundin mich noch gewarnt, draußen nicht das Handy zu benutzen, da es ziemlich normal war, daß Diebe einem das Handy aus den Händen rissen.

Above you can see the typical workers' housing in Puning. In the background they were building a more modern apartment complex. These are pretty common there now. In 2007, the most remarkable building must have been this one:	Oben sieht man die üblichen Arbeiterunterkünfte in Puning. Im Hintergrund wurde ein modernerer Wohnblock hingestellt. Solche sind dort heutzutage üblich. 2007 war das auffälligste Gebäude aber dieses:

At least I don't know why else I would have taken a photo of it. Another remarkable view was this peacock pansy (Junonia almana):	Zumindest wüßte ich nicht, warum sonst ich ein Foto davon gemacht hätte. Ein weiterer interessanter Anblick war dieser Junonia almana (Papilio (Nymphalis) Almana Linnæus, kein deutscher WP-Eintrag):

& that was it pretty much for Puning. Because there really was nothing to see or do, we went to Shantou, a much bigger & more important port city nearby. The parting view of Puning was this taxi station:	& das war es auch schon, was Puning angeht. Da es dort wirklich nichts zu sehen oder tun gab, fuhren wir nach Shantou, eine deutlich größere & wichtigere Stadt in der Nähe. Die letzte Ansicht aus Puning war diese Taxistation:

My girlfriend had some business to do in Shantou & wanted to meet a friend. So, it was not much of a touristy trip & we stayed only 2 days. Effectively, we were just in the area around the People's Square. There are a lot of statues in the area, though. This is the biggest one:	Meine Freundin hatte in Shantou etwas zu erledigen & wollte eine Freundin treffen. War also kein touristischer Trip & wir blieben nur 2 Tage. Eigentlich hielten wir uns nur in der Gegend um den Volkspark auf. Gibt dort aber eine Menge Statuen. Dies ist die größte:

In front of the Workers Cultural Palace (that's where my girlfriend had to go to) was another one. More naked kids carrying a sea snail shell:	Vor dem Arbeiterkulturpalast (wo meine Freundin hin mußte) war eine weitere. Noch mehr nackte Kinder, die ein Schneckenhaus tragen:

In the harbour nearby, people were swimming in the dirty water. To me this looked quite dangerous, because the ships were passing not too far away. The ferry below is just some 10 m from the nearest swimmer.	Im nahegelegenen Hafen schwammen einige Leute im dreckigen Wasser. Sah recht gefährlich aus, da Schiffe nah vorbeifuhren. Die Fähre, die man unten sieht, war nur ca. 10m vom nächsten Schwimmer entfernt.

Shantou is obviously also a military port. A bit down the harbour I saw the frigate below. Should be a Type 053H1G (Jianghu-V) with the name Jiangmen (江门).	Shantou scheint auch ein Militärhafen zu sein. Ein Stück weiter sah ich nämlich diese Fregatte (wieder mal kein WP-Eintrag). Dabei handelt es sich um den Typ 053H1G (Jianghu-V) mit dem Namen Jiangmen (江门)

On the other side of the harbour a quite large Buddhist temple. From what I gather it's called Baihuajian (白花尖大庙). We didn't cross the water to visit it, though. So, this is all I got:	Auf der anderen Seite des Hafens liegt ein relativ großer buddhistischer Tempel. Wenn ich das richtig sehe, heißt er Baihuajian (白花尖大庙). Wir fuhren aber nicht rüber, um ihn zu besuchen. Also habe ich nur dieses Bild:

We stayed on the north side of the harbour & walked around a bit. There were a number of small statues. Most of them featured naked kids, for some reason.	Wir blieben auf der Nordseite des Hafens & latschten ein bißchen rum. Es gab so einige kleinere Statuen. Die meisten davon stellten warum auch immer nackte Kinder dar.

I have a suspicion that some people in the US would consider this almost child pornography. But, seriously, this is just a celebration of children, I suppose. In China, children are extremely important. & people are not quite as suspicious of child nudity as in the US.	Habe den Verdacht, daß man das in den USA schon fast als Kinderpornographie ansehen würde. Vermutlich ist das aber nur ein Zeichen der Wichtigkeit der Kinder in China.

There were not only kids, though. Some animal statues could be found, & this:	Es gab jedoch nicht ausschließlich Kinderstatuen. Einige Tiere fanden sich auch. & dies:

Can't really say what this is supposed to be. An unfinished beauty, perhaps? Well, enough of sculptures... Although it was in the middle of the city, I found this huge snail creeping around:	Weiß nicht, was das sein soll, vielleicht die unvollendete Schöne. Nunja, genug von den Skulpturen ... Obwohl es mitten in der Stadt war, kroch mir diese große Schnecke über den Weg:

Then it was time to return to the hotel. This is what a room in a fairly modern middle class hotel (private, not part of a chain) in China looks like:	Dann war es Zeit, zum Hotel zu fahren. So sieht ein Zimmer in einem relativ modernen chinesischen Mittelklassehotel (privat, kein Kettenhotel) aus:

The toilet was a traditional hole in the ground. Toilet paper is supposed to be thrown into the garbage bin beside it:	Die Toilette war ein traditionelles Loch im Boden. WC-Papier sollte man in den Abfalleimer entsorgen:

When we left for Shenzhen the next day I found some more piece of nature:	Als wir am nächsten Tag in Richtung Shenzhen aufbrachen, fand ich ein weiteres Stück Natur:

& that was that for Puning & Shantou. Puning is forgettable. Shantou on the other hand has much more to offer than I showed here. I tried to get a teaching job there, but never succeeded. & now I don't want to anymore. Oh well, just a few more pics:	& das waren Puning & Shantou. Puning kann man vergessen. Shantou andererseits hat weit mehr zu bieten, als ich hier zeige. Habe auch mal versucht, dort einen Lehrerjob zu bekommen, war aber nicht erfolgreich. & jetzt will ich nicht mehr.
