Gates of Mountains has natural features that will make you do a double take. . .
As the earth's tectonic plates push on each other the pressure will create enough heat to bend and fold the rock as it pushes up. On other parts of the cliff faces folds of rock are readily visible like the curves in this photo. This is the largest arch in the Gates of the Mountains. It is big enough for our 65 foot tour boat go through sideways. The elephant formation was named by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as they traveled down this canyon. There is no blasting, mining or carving allowed in this canyon. With that being said the name Lewis, Clark and crew gave this just makes me grin. Drum roll please . . . . They named it The Monster of the Canyon for apparent reasons.Between the private landowners, who have placed their lands in an agricultural trust, and Montana State this canyon and it's wonderful history will always be protected from development. Stay tuned for more . . .
