Diving down 95ft, on a single breath, to explore a sunken whaling ship.
INTRO
After one minute of slow focused kicks I reached the sand, next to me, an 18th century whaling ship stood tall and ominous. Something about sunken ships always puts a creepy feeling in my stomach. I think it is the thought that at one point the boat was floating atop the water functioning as any vessel would, with captain and crew, and now it has descended into the alien world that is the worlds ocean, to date.. we have explored less than 5% of of it.
As I look around, in awe of the sandy abyss that I have just arrived in, I am put into a trance like state. All of the creatures that surround me seem to be functioning almost in slow motion. Little "guppy " like fish swim straight to my face and seem to be shocked that a monkey has just landed in their world. Time seems to stand still down here. I look up to make sure that my two dive buddies are still above, floating on what looks like silky metallic oil. The sun glistens down to me in what could be described angelic pulses of light. I look at my watch, 2 minutes on the timer, It is almost time to head back to the surface to revive my lungs. All things in my body are screaming "AIR!!". I slow my thoughts and head for the surface.
The following video is a free-dive film (diving on one breath of air) shot off of the west side of Maui, in 96ft of water
I hope you enjoy!
