A New York Adventure, Part One

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

For as long as I've known my wife, it has been a dream of hers to no only go to New York, but to go during the run up to Christmas. To see the huge Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, to ice skate in Central Park and to see the sights. So, that's what we did!

Time Square

When they say New York is "the city that never sleeps", the weren't lying!

Our hotel was right next to Time Square. When I say "right next to", I mean it. We stepped out of our hotel, turned right, walked for literally 10 steps and we were on Time Square! I'll tell you this now.

Grand Central Terminal

No trip to New York could be complete without a trip to Grand Central Terminal. Although we did make the mistake of getting there at 6pm in the evening, and it seems the whole of New York travelled through it to get home from work!

World Trade Centre

A truly humbling experience, you can't help but be reminded of the saddening events that happened back in 2001.

The two memorial fountains that now stand in the place of the former towers felt really poignant, not to mention the incredibly moving moment when, as we walked along the side of the fountain reading the seemingly endless list of names of unfortunate souls who lost their lives that tragic day, one of them had a single white rose sat in the groves of the name. Just a simple reminder that these were people, real people, people who were loved that were taken from the world.

A walk on Wall Street

Of course, a walk on Wall Street had to be done! Although, in hindsight, going on a Saturday when the financial markets were shut might have been a mistake as we wouldn't have seen the buzz of the stock exchange. But I suppose we did have a really quite quiet street to stroll along and enjoy the sights, including the infamous Fearless Girl statue. This girl was originally installed standing up against the Wall Street Bull, but now they sit apart, and the girl now seems to be standing up against the New York Stock Exchange.
