The Art of Fugue

I have made this photo during the "Manifesta 10" exhibition in Saint Petersburg (Russia) in 2014. It took the second place in the conceptual photography amateur category on the Golden Camera International Photo Award 2014.

Plastic interpretation of the musical form, by correlating the audio with the light, considered as two-dimensional time-varying alternation of minimum and maximum density and intensity of the electromagnetic field, respectively.​

Vladimir Smolyar's "Art of Fugue" was created especially for the exhibition "John Cage.
Silent presence." The task of the participant was to demonstrate the relevance of ideas of
Cage and Duchamp and their evolution in the modern culture. This work is related to artifacts that exist in the field of contemporary acoustics and define the tradition paradoxical picking. It is composed of ready-made objects - piano and a bicycle wheel (rotating with the cyclic repetition of hidden phase movements 4'33 "by John Cage), and strings thread linking the piano with the surrounding reality, pointing together with a bicycle wheel on the traditions of Marcel Duchamp. Piano itself is the common participant among Futurists and members of the Fluxus movement, points to the specific context in which the art of John Cage presents. "Art of the Fugue" itself, "silent" in its own location, capable of being interactive, sounding in any acoustic performances, as had occurred during the composer Sergei Zagniy's ​playing.
