Sparrow Fledgling
Hi!
The Beatles
'Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.'
I have had this song swirling around my head for days now, and it got me thinking that I would introduce to you someone...
Meet Hermes!
During my half term I rescued a baby sparrow. It had fallen from the roof of my house (from its nest) and into my garden. This sparrow was trying to hide in my wall before I found it. I crossed over to the centre of the garden where I tried to get its parents attention so they could have their baby back- alas, they did not come. I took him inside where he lived in a dog cage for one day before I purchased an actual bird cage.
In the bird cage, he seemed to thrive in his own little space. To make it feel more like home, I added in tree branches, worms and fat balls as well as a bowl of water. It took quite a while for Hermes to learn to drink out of it- so for the meantime I fed him through a small pipette. I also learned that fledgling sparrows are very keen to eat scarmbled eggs, which I mixed with chicken feed and water. I kept Hermes for a week before he learned to fly and I set him free.
This is Hermes eating scrambled eggs.
This one is a little blurry!! Oh well, it is Hermes after a bath
More feeding
I distinctly remember the high pitched chirps that met my ears in the morning, these were differernt from the usual ones I hear- I also noticed that Hermes was looking out at my window at all the other birds flittering past- looking stricking against the blue sky. I walked downstairs with the sparrow in my hands, slowly I uncurled my fingers and exposed the bird to the outside world. He instantly burst into song before talking off into the world ahead!
Thank you for reading! As always, have a wonderful day
XoXo E
