I often see this little one. A common weed you may say. But it is also pretty amazing how tough they are and how they can grow fast and spread.
Little conquerors!
Erodium moschatum
There is a few types of Erodium plants growing in Portugal but this one seems to be the most common one growing around the whole country. It belongs to Geranium family and can also found throughout the Europe, Asia and North America. It is not very picky as I find it growing in the lawns where there is more moisture especially at this time of the year, but also on more open spaces, near the coast on very poor and sandy soil.
Those photos I took a week ago and it was already in bloom. And judging by the amount of seeds pods (those are the link spiky things sticking out) it must have been blooming for a while. but the peak for them is still to come. Between February and end of April they will be racing to open the flowers and produce as many seeds as possible. On the wild areas where the grass is not cute regularly it will look pretty spectacular. They can grow quite tall and with large amount of tiny, purple flowers they put up quite a show.
The seed pods are not mature here yet. Later they will dry, turn light brown and start to crack open releasing seeds. The seeds are quite funny looking too with their long shape with little hair and twisty end to help them fly away and colonize new territories.
