The Metropolitan Cathedral of Asunción is the main Catholic temple of Asuncion. It is located in the Cathedral Quarter, right in the historical center of the capital of Paraguay. It was the first diocese of the Rio de la Plata.
The last current model was built during the government of Don Carlos Antonio Lopez and inaugurated in 1845. It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, patroness of the capital city of the country. It has a high altar clad in silver.

At first it was called The Incarnation.
It was built with wood and clay in 1539, but
with the encouragement of Asuncion, on February 4, 1543, the church was burned and almost the entire town

The temple was designed by the Military Architect Pascual Urdapilleta, who also worked in the refurbishment of the Cultural Center of the Republic.1 Its construction began in May 1842 and assisted in it Carlos Zucchi, Patricio Aquino and Tomás Berges. On October 27, 1845, the new cathedral was blessed, unfinished. She was blessed by the Vicar General Monsignor Pedro Jose Moreno, because she was unable to fulfill such important commitment, the Diocesan Bishop Monsignor Basilio López. Since then the cathedral has continued with neoclassical architecture built in the nineteenth century, to the present.2
On July 11, 2015, the current high pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, celebrated a mass in this cathedral.
