Vintgar Gorge / Vintgar Klamm (Slovenia)

in #photography5 years ago

A few weeks ago I visited Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia. This gorge is located about 4 kilometers northwest of Bled in the immediate vicinity of the village Gorje (Google maps link after the post).

Between the mountains Horn and Boršt, the Radovna River flows through the approximately 1.6 km long and up to 300 meters deep gorge, at the end of which is the 13-meter-high Šum waterfall.

At the end of the 19th century, the gorge has been developed into a tourist attraction, so visitors can walk through the gorge on well-developed wooden footbridges, wooden bridges and galleries and admire the many small waterfalls, cascades and rapids.
The walking time through the gorge to the other entrance is given as about 30 minutes.

In July, the gorge opens already at 7am, and I was there on time at this time - first and the first few minutes even alone, then a tourist overtook me who has also photographed.

All alone, I was able to enjoy the beautiful canyon and the river in peace and take a few photos, and after about 15 minutes, I met the first visitors who went in the opposite direction, and a few minutes later they were followed by other tourists.

Shortly before I arrived at the end of the gorge, I was already overtaken by tourists and many came also from the opposite direction in small and larger groups.

At the other end of the gorge, I took a look at the Šum waterfall and took pictures, but it was already quite bright and the sun was shining directly on the rocks. That's why I even did not climb for a better view over the rocks closer to the waterfall. I did not want to encourage any of the many tourists to imitate me.

Nevertheless, I quickly descended into the riverbed for the photo of the waterfall - better than nothing ;)

On the way back, I only had the opportunity to take pictures a few times, because I felt like during rush hour at a subway station: people from behind and from the front, chatter and laughter in all sorts of languages - the river was hardly to hear.

When I arrived at the upper entrance after about two hours, the gravel parking lot was full of cars and coaches, and in the parking lot at the other end of the gorge it must have looked the same - people, tons of tourists.

My conclusion to the Vintgar gorge:
It is a beautiful gorge with many great views of the crystal clear river, waterfalls and rapids. I can recommend a visit without reservation and I will certainly come back, but next time I will try it shortly after the gorge opens in the spring, before the tourist season starts, and I will definitely come back as early as possible in the morning.

My waterfall is the highest choice in the beauty of nature.!

Howdy sir johannpiber! lol..your favorite fellow travelers...tourists! lol.. I think your strategy to avoid them next time is a good one though.

I know you hate them too, my friend 😄
Maybe I should go on a rainy day, but this might be even worse, when the crowds are walking through the narrow gorge with their umbrellas 😂

Posted using Partiko Android

lol! I would think there might not be many people there on a rainy day but if they are tourists and have that area on their trip ahead of time I guess they would be there. Too bad. lol. Are the paths or walks open in winter? I think they are closed aren't they? too bad.

You might be completely right - tourists have often no other choice, if they want to see something. This gorge is not that far away from me, just about 1 hour driving - I will try it one day in late Autumn.
Yes, unfortunately the gorge is closed in Winter, because it is to dangerous.

How do they close a gorge sir johannpiber? that would take a very big gate.

A big gate would be an idea, @janton, but not needed. When I have been there a few months ago, the gate was still closed:

Of course you could find a way to pass this gate, and I am sure, many people do so, but I don't ;)

I think you might need to break the rules for the sake of your followers sir johannpiber! lol.

Maybe I will, who knows, what will be in the next Winter? There are still a few months to go by, and maybe they will open the gate if I ask politely 😉

WOW the beauty there is spectacular, and these shots are fantastic, I would love to visit somewhere like that I love those wooden paths and rails they add a whole charm tot he area

Good morning JJ 😀
I thank you so much that you like my "forgotten" photos 😁

I have been very impressed myself, when I saw that these wooden bridges and footways lead through most of the gorge. As long as there were only a few people it was wonderful.
The busses come and the people run from north to south or from south to north, they buy a souvenier and the busses leave and make place for the next busses. That's bad, but the gorge, and what they have made of it, that is amazing beautiful 😀

It must be such a shame such a beautiful spot spoiled with so many tourist you plan to revisit there out of tourist season makes a lot of sense to me

I think I even got a good day when I was there, because now even the website says:

Dear visitors of Gorje and Vintgar Gorge,
Some unpleasant situations, such as traffic jams and long queues for tickets, cannot be avoided when there are crowds of visitors. We apologise to you all in advance and would like to ask you for your patience, compliance with traffic regulations and warnings as well as appropriate behaviour during your visit.
Crowded sights may result in unpleasant situations ... and so on

Source: http://www.vintgar.si/?lang=en

Maybe I should even go on a rainy day - the rocks might be slippery, when I leave the path to photograph, but I can handle these ;)

that does sound pretty bad fro photographers but ok for tourists just want to seeing the place

As long as your careful on a rainy day it would be good and less crowded

Yes, true - I'll see what I will do.

There's a saying "Des einen Freud', des anderen Leid". I think, this translation might match that saying best: "One man's joy is another man's suffering".

That’s a good saying for sure

And certainly very true too ;)

Terrific essay and travelogue. I really love your running or falling water shots.

Thank you so much, @momzillanc, it was an amazing walk through that beautiful gorge ... until the tourists came. I am a foreigner in Slovenia too, but I don't feel as a tourist ;)
I also thank you for resteeming my post, that's very kind of you :)
