[ENG-SPN] A heritage landmark of medieval Navarra / Un hito patrimonial de la Navarra medieval

Navarra, despite the historical discrimination of that first chronicler of the Saint James Way, who was the Benedictine monk, Aymeric Picaud, continues to be, not only a fertile land, of beautiful valleys in which picturesque little villages are located and where alternating, with the passionate chromatic intensity that characterizes them, the beautiful emerald green color of their extensive pastures and the supine and dazzling yellow color of the jaramargo, the plant from which that bittersweet condiment, although nevertheless pleasant to the palate, which is mustard, is extracted.

But Navarra is also a land in which a spectacular artistic heritage stands out, which, as far as architectural styles are concerned, preserves, in an acceptable degree of conservation, some Romanesque constructions, whose symbolic content not only baffles, but also, always invites speculation. One of its most beautiful examples, dominating the upper part of a picturesque town, called Artaiz, is this temple dedicated to the figure of the misogenous and controversial Saint Peter, in whose execution, which dates back to the 12th century, there are those who see the hand of some knights, the Templars, whose presence in the kingdom of Sancho VII the Strong - one of the three kings who participated in the decisive battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, which occurred in 1212 - became remarkably evident, as did the guardians, who were , at all costs, of the main pilgrimage routes that converged in Compostela.

Navarra, a pesar de la discriminación histórica de aquel primer cronista del Camino de Santiago, que fue el monje benedictino, Aymeric Picaud, continúa siendo, no sólo una tierra fértil, de hermosos valles en el que se asientan pintorescos pueblecitos y donde se alterna, con la apasionada intensidad cromática que los caracteriza, el hermoso color verde esmeralda de sus extensos pastos y el supino y deslumbrador color amarillo del jaramargo, planta de donde se extrae ese condimento agridulce, aunque no obstante, agradable al paladar, que es la mostaza.

Pero Navarra es también una tierra en la que sobresale un espectacular patrimonio artístico, el cual, en cuanto a estilos arquitectónicos se refiere, conserva, en aceptable grado de conservación, unas construcciones románicas, cuyo contenido simbólico, no sólo desconcierta, sino que, además, invita siempre a la especulación. Uno de sus más bellos ejemplares, dominando la parte alta de un pintoresco pueblo, de nombre Artaiz, es este templo dedicado a la figura del misógeno y controvertido San Pedro, en cuya ejecución, que se remonta al siglo XII, hay quien ve la mano de unos caballeros, los templarios, cuya presencia en el reino de Sancho VII el Fuerte -uno de los tres reyes que participaron en la decisiva batalla de las Navas de Tolosa, acaecida en 1212- se hizo notablemente patente, como los guardianes, que fueron, a ultranza, de los principales caminos de peregrinación que confluían en Compostela.
