There are places, located in the most remote part of those innumerable pilgrimage routes, which, in many cases took advantage of the old Roman roads, which, in addition to taking the pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela and the confines of the known world, marked by that unknowable border formed by the wide sea and one of the northernmost capes of the Iberian Peninsula, that of Finisterre, bring together, in their essence, more centuries of History and architectural styles, enough to constitute, by themselves, an admirable compendium of wisdom, no stranger, on the other hand, to awakening in man that immanent fondness for mysteries and the unknown, which is summarized, in the end, in everything that he does not fully understand.

Such would be the case, for example, of this notable sacred site of Wamba, an interesting name in itself, which summarizes the Visigoth origins of this peaceful town, lost in the valleys and mountains of the charismatic community of Valladolid. A place that, in addition, brings together the singular vision of undecided beginnings, which marked the preeminence of a repopulation or pre-Romanesque art, which was nourished by later styles, until reaching our time as we see it, leaving traces of multitude of curious related characters, among which, of course, there is no shortage of those from two rival military orders: that of the Knights Templar and that of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem.

Hay lugares, situados en lo más recóndito de esos innumerables caminos de peregrinación, que, en muchos casos aprovechaban las viejas calzadas romanas, que, además de llevar al peregrino hacia Santiago de Compostela y los confines del mundo conocido, marcados por esa frontera incognoscible formada por el ancho mar y uno de los cabos más septentrionales de la Península Ibérica, el de Finisterre, reúnen, en su esencia, más siglos de Historia y de estilos arquitectónicos, como para constituir, por sí mismos, todo un admirable compendio de sabiduría, no ajeno, por otra parte, a despertar en el hombre esa inmanente afición por los misterios y lo desconocido, que se resume, al fin y al cabo, en todo aquello que no termina de comprender.

Tal sería el caso, por ejemplo, de este notable recinto sacro de Wamba, nombre ya de por sí interesante, que resume los orígenes visigodos de este pacífico pueblo, perdido en los valles y montes de la carismática comunidad de Valladolid. Un lugar, que, además, reúna la singular visión de unos comienzos indecisos, que marcaron la preminencia de un arte de repoblación o prerrománico, que se fue nutriendo de estilos posteriores, hasta llegar a nuestro tiempo tal y como lo vemos, dejando huellas de multitud de curiosos personajes relacionados, entre los que no faltan, desde luego, las de dos órdenes militares rivales: la de los caballeros templarios y la de los hospitalarios de San Juan de Jerusalén.
