[ENG-SPN] Cervatos and sex: warning to sinners / Cervatos y el sexo: aviso a pecadores

Some people are surprised, due to their shameless theme, that this type of representations were common in medieval temples, being especially abundant in that decidedly "magical" environment, which is the northern land of Cantabria.

Believe it or not, this church, dedicated to the figure of Saint Peter, was, back in the 12th century, one of the four great Collegiate Churches -from which, in part, the word college derives- that existed and, in fact, still exist in Cantabria.

To understand their presence in a Christian temple, we must remember that in those times, the only way in which the common people had access, so to speak, to culture, was through graphic representations and that said representations, they were, furthermore, the way in which the powers that be directed thought and actions, warning, in such a realistic way, how easy it was to condemn oneself to hell through the excesses of sex outside the strict laws of marriage and of procreation.

Hay quien se sorprende, por su desvergonzada temática, que este tipo de representaciones fueran corrientes en los templos medievales, siendo especialmente abundantes en ese entorno decididamente ‘mágico’, que es la tierra norteña de Cantabria.

Lo crean o no, esta iglesia, dedicada a la figura de San Pedro, fue, allá por el siglo XII, una de las cuatro grandes Colegiatas -de ellas, en parte, deriva la palabra colegio- que existieron y de hecho, todavía existen en Cantabria.

Para entender su presencia en un templo cristiano, hemos de recordar, que en aquellos tiempos, la única forma en que el pueblo llano tenía acceso, por decirlo de algún modo, a la cultura, era a través de representaciones gráficas y que dichas representaciones, eran, además, la forma en la que los poderes fácticos dirigían el pensamiento y las acciones, advirtiendo, de una manera tan realista, de lo fácil que era condenarse al infierno a través de los excesos del sexo fuera de las estrictas leyes del matrimonio y de la procreación.
