[ENG-SPN] Trees, myths and Marian apparitions / Árboles, mitos y apariciones Marianas

Possibly Tolkien was the modern author, who, with the perseverance of his enormous creative capacity, delved deeper than any other into that fabulous universe of legends, myths and symbolism associated with those unique promoters of life and balance, which are trees. Unforgettable, for example, is the mythical figure of the Ent, the shepherd of trees and at the same time, the guardian of the forests, who, in the face of threats and tragedies that hurt his familiar environment, allies himself with the little hobbits to face the terrible devastation caused by the orcs.

Curiously, in Spain, there is a circumstance that, saving the appropriate distances and moving away from how grotesque the world of comparisons can sometimes be, we could assume that it has a similar mediatism, since the tree has been, on countless occasions , associated with the appearance of Marian images, reputed to be very miraculous. This is the case, to cite a few examples, of quite a few Virgins of La Encina or La Carrasca, the vast majority of them, associated with the mysterious Order of the Temple. But, perhaps, the most relevant, the one that also combines the rich symbolism of another fascinating natural landmark, such as bees, is the Patroness of La Rioja: a Virgin, that of Valvanera, who was miraculously found in the hollow of an old oak tree and was also protected by a honeycomb.

Posiblemente fuera Tolkien el autor moderno, que, con la perseverancia de su enorme capacidad creativa, profundizara más que ningún otro, en ese fabuloso universo de leyendas, de mitos y de simbolismo asociado a esos singulares promotores de vida y equilibrio, que son los árboles. Inolvidable, por ejemplo, es la figura mítica del Ent, el pastor de árboles y a la vez, el guardián de los bosques, que, frente a las amenazas y tragedias que hieren su familiar entorno, se alía con los pequeños hobbits para hacer frente a la terrible devastación provocada por los orcos.

Curiosamente, en España, se da una circunstancia, que, salvando las oportunas distancias y alejándonos de lo grotesco que pueda resultar a veces el mundo de las comparaciones, podríamos suponer que tiene una mediatez similar, pues el árbol ha estado, en infinidad de ocasiones, asociado a la aparición de imágenes Marianas, con fama de ser muy milagrosas. Es el caso, por citar algunos ejemplos, de no pocas Vírgenes de la Encina o de la Carrasca, la gran mayoría de ellas, asociadas a la misteriosa Orden del Temple. Pero, quizás, la más relevante, aquella que aúna, además, el rico simbolismo de otro fascinante hito natural, como son las abejas, es la Patrona de La Rioja: una Virgen, la de Valvanera, que fue milagrosamente encontrada en el hueco de un viejo roble y estaba, además, protegida por un panal de abejas.
