The history of a small town in the Russian Empire. Rest pre-revolutionary Skadovsk (Now South of Ukraine)

The city of Skadovsk is located on the northern coast of the Black Sea. It was founded in 1894 by the landowner Sergei Baltazarovich Skadovsky as a port intended for the export of agricultural products abroad.

But gradually the city becomes a famous resort due to unique natural and climatic conditions. The boundless steppe is connected here with the warm sea. The air is filled with the aroma of the steppe strip, ozone, iodine, the water in the sea warms up well, and the sea on the shore is shallow, which makes the resort attractive for resting parents with children. Summer here is hot, the air is healing, the sea is warm, friendly.

In 1896 the engineer V.D. Rummel researched the Dzharylgatsky flood and concluded that Skadovsk has everything necessary to become a resort: healing air, warm sea, temperate climate. Based on Rummel's research, Sergei Skadovskiy pays attention not only to the construction of the port, but also to the establishment of health resorts.

The first vacationers came to Skadovsk already in 1895. They were only 15 people, in 1899 there were already 200 people, and in 1902 there were 500 tourists. The beginning of the existence of Skadovsk, as a resort, was laid.

Near the sea was arranged a boulevard, decorated with flower beds and fountains. For the convenience of the guests built wooden baths and a spa. In the resort hall concerts and performances were organized, most often they were organized by local residents, but professional actors also came. On the boulevard the brass band played every day, it created a unique atmosphere of the holiday, attracted a lot of people to the beach. On the boulevard a playground for children's games was built, it was a merit of the charitable society "Bless the Children", which was headed by the wife of the city's founder Maria Alexandrovna Skadovskaya. Children's playground was equipped with gymnastic equipment.

Vacationers were offered sea walks. For them it was possible to hire a boat or steam boat, the route usually ran to the island of Dzharylgach and Mayak.
For the convenience of the guests, the resort's office opens, in which it was possible to find a list of people who rented houses and rooms to holidaymakers, in the office it was possible to rent furniture if the living conditions were not comfortable enough.
The water in the city was from artesian wells of great depth and had excellent tasty qualities and a constant temperature of 12 degrees.

Resorts had the opportunity to contact their relatives through the postal and telegraph office and the international telegraph office, which were in Skadovsk.
In 1899 the resort of Skadovsk was mentioned five times in the Kherson newspaper "Югъ" (Southern) as a wonderful resort. This served the city as a good advertisement. Skadovskiy resort was mentioned in the Encyclopedia "Brockhaus and Efron", in Lender's book "The Black Sea and the Caucasus", in the book "Recreational areas of Russia", in the brochure "Skadovsk Resort on the North Black Sea Coast".

The Odessa publicist Reichel wrote in 1904: "There are examples of the extremely rapid emergence of cities. At a convenient seaside station, where nothing else existed yesterday, there is, like Phoenix from the ashes, a port city with wide, right streets, large squares, a quay, a marina and a young but beautifully located on the beach boulevard. The resort value of Skadovsk is facilitated by the establishment in it of a medical institution, warm sea baths and a hydropathic room. The future of Skadovsk is, no doubt.
