Beautiful Cathedral Architecture of Montreal

in #photography7 years ago

Walking through downtown Montreal, you will see some churches or cathedrals here and there, pointing to the highly religious history of Montreal.

From big to small, cathedrals have pleasing architectural style, often grandiose. The insides are also often well designed architecturally. You don't see many buildings made anymore with the uniquely pleasing allure of cathedral architecture.

I took some picture of two cathedrals I passed by in a recent trip downtown. I passed others as well but forgot to take pictures...

*Note, photos I didn't take have source links.

Interior

You can go inside this cathedral without having to pay (unlike the next cathedral I will show). It has many arches and a nice ceiling with various images painted there. I didn't want to go in too far and disturb people who were doing their church thing, so I only took pictures from the entrance.

Here is a nice picture from their site, showing how the cathedral looks with the night lighting:

This neo-gothic cathedral was built to hold it's first sermon by 1859.

Back then the area looked a lot less like a major city with tall buildings around. It almost looks like the countryside. How Montreal has changed...

Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal

IMG_20180214_143210.jpg

The Notre-Dame basilica of Montreal is the first church of the Gothic Revival style in Canada. Its history, noted by the Sulpician Fathers since its foundation, is intimately tied in to the history of the City of Montreal. It bears witness to its Catholic foundations and the ever-present connections between the arts and religion. Its architectural style marked a turning point in the religious tradition and was imitated by several parishes.

Interior Tourist Attraction

The interior decor of Notre-Dame invokes a sense of wonder. Its sanctuary, its colors, its windows are captured in photographs by almost a million visitors every year.

You have to pay to get inside, and I wasn't up for it. Maybe another time. But here is what it looks like from pictures on their site:

Last summer I had taken a photo of the Basilica with the "Sun god" in the middle, watching over and giving life to all ;)

if catholic church is a business establishment, it could be the best real state investment in our history. :)

One outstanding feature of christianity is that they invest so much in building thier places of worship. One church in Africa spent an equivalent of over $300 000 dollars in constructing a new church building. Imagine that staggering amount! Meanwhile a reasonable percentage of the members of that church live below poverty level. I don't know whether to describe this as a good tiding but I do know that this stresses the love that christians have for their creator.. They want his place of worship to be the best building in that town

Absolutely. The post was more about nice looking buildings. But yeah I get what you mean, it's a waste in terms of using money that can really help people in ways that matter more.

Wow that is beautiful inside and out. I love old cathedrals.
