Photography: Ellora Caves #4
Cave 10, the Carpenters Cave. The ribs here on the ceiling show where this cave gets its knickname. Carved to emulate wooden beams, this roof forms a grand arch that culminates in a dome shape behind the Buddha. 28 vertical pillars line the surround which seperates the main chamber from an oval prominade used for circumnavigating monks. The date given to this chamber is 650CE. The history has that these caves ceased to be inhabitated as active monistaries
around the 13th century.
