Rugged south shore of Maui

The big island has been getting all of the volcano attention lately but many people don't know that Haleakala has erupted several times in the past 1000 years with the most recent in the 17th century. It is still considered an active volcano. If you drive past Kihei and Wailea you eventually end up in miles and miles of raw volcano rock. The contrast with the sea and sand is amazing from the air!
