How to deal with a creative block.

in #photography7 years ago

We have all heard of writer’s block when we’re trying to get our papers finished last minute for a school assignment.

Creatives also deal with a creative block. A creative block is when there is a lack of inspiration or energy to get out and create. These times seem like the end of the world to us creatives because we feel that we are meant to be out there creating something 24/7, so we often look at these blocks as a negative thing.

This is where perspective and mentality comes in to play. 1) we can dread that we aren’t creating and feel like this is the end of our lives and be sad and upset, or 2) we can look at this is a good thing, take a step back and see the bigger picture. As a creative the learning never stops, the inspiration never stops. In these moments we need to continue our education on how we can create things more effectively or how we can create the things we dream of creating that we thought were out of reach before. The 2nd part of this is the inspiration. As a photographer I really enjoy watching music videos and understand their lighting and how they are creating the mood, and their stuff generally inspires to think how I could do this in a still image.

We can also look at other art forms. One of the things I love the most is ballet. It’s such a powerful and elegant style of dance, but how do they make it seem so effortless? They continue through the pain and hardship and continue to look elegant and beautiful and they practice, and study.

This image was inspired by the music video Ballerina - Belly, you wouldn’t probably get the idea from watching the video, this is where prespective and our identities show in our creativity.

This image took over an hour of shooting to get what I had envisioned, but we finally did it and I am quite happy with the results.

Sometimes you need to take a step back and enjoy the struggle and understand what you can do to improve it, and yourself for the future.

I hope y’all are having a great Saturday and this maybe could someone struggling with a creative block
