PATRICKS WELL

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

Patrick’s well was once one of the most important sources of water in Bromborough Village ( to think I can walk their in about 4-5 minutes) The name Bromborough derived from an Anglo-Saxon term meaning “ The fortification or enclosure of a man named brunna” Despite the village having very ancient origins very little is known about Patrick’s well until the 18th century.

By all accounts it’s been there for over 243 years, I don’t suppose anybody apart from the odd dog uses it anymore.

The legend of Saint Patrick.
Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the fifth century and was traditionally responsible for taking Christianity to Ireland. A local Bromborough legend states that Patrick bless this well before sailing off to Ireland. Whilst no evidence supports this, springs and wells throughout Britain are often associated with Christian saints and pre- Christian gods and goddesses.

How much of this is fact or fiction I’ve no idea but it sounds nice and it’s still there today.
Thanks for popping in cheers mike

Not heard of Patrick’s well before in Bromborough Village! As you say, it was an important source of water for the locals more than a hundred years or so ago.

A interesting local Bromborough legend about Saint Patrick - could be fact or fiction.

It’s in Brotherton Park not far from spital dam. Cheers mike
