It does not take a genius in history to know that World War II was a traumatic time for humankind. Thousands of people died in battles and so many were captured and taken to concentration camps. This was the fate, as we know, of the majority of Jews living in Germany.

It turns out that in these fearsome places - where people were poorly treated and exploited to death in slave labor - the maladies were not just about the devastation of the War with its aerial attacks and shootings. In the hands of doctors like Josef Mengele, Sigmund Rascher, Eduard Wirths and Werner Fischer, countless scientific experiments, worthy of horror films, were put into practice, using prisoners as guinea pigs.

Find out, in the list below, the worst and most fearsome medical experiments conducted during the Nazi era:

MILITARY TESTING

They aimed at solutions to increase the effectiveness of soldiers on the battlefields, such as:

Congelamento

The victims, who in these cases were always naked, were placed in barrels of virtually frozen water or exposed to ice. The intention of the Nazi doctors was to calculate the maximum resistance of the human being to the cold. Of course, countless people died of hypothermia in the midst of experiments, which did not stop there. That's because after death, researchers were still testing resuscitation methods.

Heating

These were also tests that tried to determine the limit of the human body before the increase of temperature. Prisoners of war were exposed to incandescent lights or immersed in cauldrons of boiling water. Often the freezing "guinea pigs" themselves participated in this other experiment, in the attempt of resuscitation, when people were almost dead. There are no records of survivors in these experiments.

Pressure

Other cruel experiments to which prisoners were exposed were pressure tests. Researchers at the time wanted to find out what the safe altitude was for German soldiers. Many people have lost consciousness or died from convulsions due to excessive intracranial pressure. According to historical records, of the 200 victims of these experiments, 80 died during the tests. The remainder was then executed.

Sea water

You can not tell exactly whether the test was to know if people would survive or die faster by consuming seawater, but it did. A group of 90 Gypsies was left in a chamber, receiving only little food and salt water. As the reports of the experiments, so dehydrated, they were seen licking the newly washed tiles of the place, in despair for drinking water.

Shards

Herta Oberheuser, a doctor who became famous for her sadism, was responsible for these painful experiments. During the tests, she injured her victims with nails, shards of glass, sawdust, and wood splinters to simulate the fighting conditions among the soldiers and to see what damage injuries from shrapnel could cause.

Hunger

Thousands of prisoners, including many children, were left without food on malnutrition tests.

TESTS OF EUGENIA

Tests that looked for fast and effective ways of mass sterilization to prevent non-Aryan people from reproducing. The tests run into this corridor:

Chemical Injection

Bombastic mixtures were injected directly into the uterus of the victims, such as the famous injections of iodine and silver nitrate. In addition to the sterilization, they still perceived terrible side effects, such as cancer and internal hemorrhage.

Radiation

Unbeknownst to the prisoners, they were exposed to excessive radiation and were barren in less than 3 minutes. It was the most punctual form that the Nazi doctors found for the "problem", getting to sterilize more than 400,000 people. But the effects were also disastrous, causing immediate deaths or in the gas chamber, since the guinea pigs were injured of the experiments and were thus considered useless.

Racial difference

Countless human guinea pigs of different ethnicities were infected with the same diseases so that the Nazi doctors could analyze the evolution of the disease in each one of them.

GENERAL SCIENCE TESTS

With the argument of improving science, the Nazi doctors made the most unscrupulous tests with humans.

Testing with twins

Terrible experiments were done with twins. One, for example, tried to generate Siamese by interconnecting their blood vessels. Of the more than 1,500 twins, only 183 survived the fields.

Diseases

Tests for the cure of malaria, typhus, tuberculosis, yellow fever, typhoid fever and hepatitis were done in thousands of prisoners. The victims were deliberately infected with the diseases. About 90% of the people who participated in these tests died. In addition, the living were dissected so that doctors could see the way the disease spread through the body.

Poisons

In search of antidotes for toxic substances, many prisoners were poisoned. In addition, their reactions were observed to understand what effects they had on the body. Those who did not die after the seizures and other effects were killed for analysis.

Regeneration

Many prisoners were victims of fractures, infections, bone grafts or purposive amputations, performed by the Nazi doctors. In fact, the victims were not even given the privilege of anesthesia. After all this, the experiments were finalized with reimplantation attempts, to record how the body regenerated.
