Night-flowering mesemb

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Stomatium are small succulents that grow in the arid areas of South Africa. The name is derived from Greek: Stomation means 'open mouth' because the leaves resemble gaping jaws. They are also unusual in that the flowers open at sunset and close at around midnight.
The flowers have a stong scent and are probably pollinated by moths.
The plant pictured here is Stomatium Trifarium. I took this picture at 8pm one night
