Magenta Purple Sunset Across Flathead Lake in Montana

in #photography7 years ago

This is sunset on the Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana. I lensed this image while flying across the surface of the lake about 200 feet above the water.

I particularly like the magenta hues, colored by alpenglow effects at dusk, which gives the overall image a soft and pleasant feeling.

Flathead Lake is also known by the First Nations Salish people as "člq̓etkʷ" (I have no idea how to pronounce this!) and is the largest natural freshwater lake by surface area west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States (lower 48 states) if one takes Red Lake and Lake of the Woods to be north of the Mississippi River, rather than west of the river.

With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi (496 km2)[1] and 197 sq mi (510 km2), Flathead Lake is slightly larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, but it is much smaller in volume as Lake Tahoe is much deeper.

Flathead lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake named Lake Missoula that existed in the era of the last interglacial. The lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide, with a maximum depth of 370.7 ft (113.0 m),[1] and an average of 164.7 ft (50.2 m). This makes Flathead Lake deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. Polson Bay, at the lake's outlet, was raised 10 ft (3.0 m) by Kerr Dam.

Flathead Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the populated world for its size and type.

This image is another one from my ongoing project in which I am trying to raise awareness of the 47% of the USA and 90% of Canada that remain unpopulated wilderness.

Water is interesting because It's so hard to tell elevation when directly over top of it If I wouldn't have known I'd think you were in a boat.

Yes the horizon effect makes it difficult to gauge height which is why flying low over water in certain atmospheric and weather conditions can be dangerous.

Awesome photography of the sun setting
