Rabat, Malta is a town in the Northern Region of Malta. The name of the town "Rabat" is derived from the Arabic word for "suburb": الرباط, as it was the suburb of the old capital Mdina.
Rabat’s history can be seen from all angles and is therefore a MUST-see place in.

A historic suburb

Rabat is the historic suburb of Malta’s old capital city, Mdina. Narrow streets wind off the imposing parish church of St
Paul which dominates the main square. Rabat’s history can be seen from all angles. Look out for local shops and bakeries and try a traditional loaf of Hobza straight from the oven. For those who enjoy museums, the Roman Villa, Wignacourt Museum and Casa Bernard are all within walking distance and the Catacombs of St Paul and St Agatha house burials dating back to Roman times, decorated with beautiful frescoes.

A bustling street market

On Sunday mornings, Rabat comes to life with a thriving and bustling street market. Each week, the Monti is packed with street hawkers selling their wares. The main street becomes a hub of activity as locals gather to purchase fresh produce. Rabat is also the perfect location to try Malta’s favourite snack, Pastizzi. Lying on the outskirts of town, Tas-Sirkin is always full, with customers spilling onto the pavements and is reputed to serve the very best. The Silent City may be Rabat’s neighbour but this bustling town is something equally special. Home to a main bus terminal, Rabat is also easy to access via key routes including the 53 from Valletta and the X3 from Bugibba.
