This packet can be used with the Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) for Kindergarten: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems: Animals, Plants, and their Environment:
K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
Show your students the 3 page story in this packet and encourage them to observe what each living thing (human, animal, plant) needs. Discussion questions and answer key provided. Then do a fun activity where your kids have to place 24 cards onto the correct work mat. Three work mats are included: “Animals Need”, “Humans Need”, and “Plants Need”. Students work in groups figuring out which picture card goes on which work mat. They need to think about what each living thing needs to survive and they must work together in a group to figure out the correct answers. 2 student worksheets provided "What Do Humans Need" and "What do Plants Need".
Have your students use the house and dog pattern included in this packet to make a dog house and pet dog to take home! My kinders and first graders were able to cut these out but they could not fold and tape them together so I sent them home for assembly. If you cannot send these home, I would suggest asking for help from an aide or parent volunteers. This is such a fun way to check for learning! Your students should know what an animal needs to survive – air, sunlight, food, water, etc. Have them think of things their pet dog will need then they can draw right onto the house and the paper the house sits on (see photo example). These come out so cute, your kids will love them!
To assess learning about what plants need: have your students make a little paper flower pot to take home! (See photo) Pattern, assembly instructions, and worksheet with things plants need to live included. These come out so cute, your kids will love these too!
