Desert Rose

An Original Poem by @CarlieEster

Smooth, in the morning's sepia tones
a cactus meekly creeps and groans
aching spines make it difficult to sleep
so he stretches out his thorny feet
across the sandy desert floor
he's groping for the open door
unlocked as he left it, now it's found
rusted into the dirty ground
fumbling with his prickly hands
he wipes his eyes and understands
he cannot leave he cannot run
he cannot stretch out in the sun
his life must be spent inside the hole
hiding like a dying mole
the cactus is stiff, his belly empty
yearning for a feeding frenzy
to end this quiet solitude
he suffers because he cannot move
for days he's dry and thirsts for more
sunshine, rain, an oasis shore
these spines are so sharp and prickly
and his skin has become so green and wrinkly
the cactus may have a dry, dry skin
but there is a beating desert rose within.
