Crocodile

The crocodile’s genes don’t have intention
They do what they do to survive
Because that’s what they’ve done before.

The world doesn’t need a conspiracy
To get people to do what they do.
And our roles and our scripts as we act out our lives
Have the same kind of crocodile truth.

The systems don’t want to continue,
They’re not quite so human as that,
But continuing’s deep in the wheels and gears
Or they’d long since have fallen to dust.

Some want to tell the story
Of titanic social forces,
Each person just some mere appendage
That carries out their ideas’ actions.
But the stories are too anthropomorphic
With -isms that act like people
And people that, ironically, don’t.
So they’re wrong on two counts,
Or at least incomplete,
Because -isms think like crocodile genes.
