Watching the Middle Ages Burn
—T.S. Eliot
Its collapsing
Roof and spire,
Is watching our old world
Burn down
While Time and Fate conspire.
Concrete and Glass
We’ve made our Babels
And built them even higher,
But sooner or later
An expiry date
Consumes us all with fire.
And here we sit...
Waiting for the conflagration of the ages, "...when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God..." *.
Waiting, ever waiting for that day when "...the kings of the earth... will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning..." *
Sobering.
😄😇😄
It is sobering, my friend. You caught the Biblical allusion, not as whimsical as frost's tongue-in-cheek poem:
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
never been to in this place but one of my dream that someday I'll be able to see and experience how amazing this cathedral is.... the history, the art and culture ... this is very very sad..😔

I agree, Jackie, but Macron says he'll restore it so maybe there's hope for most of the structure
So sad
yes...thanks
I think you might want to fix the copyright date so you do not get accused of having advanced foreknowledge of the fire.
With that said, it's a sobering poem, about a sobering tragedy.
haha, thanks - A control C error - and yes, a very unsettling occurrence - all those years of burning candles and ironically, a fire caused by renovation perhaps...
