Pocket Change: We are Beggars [Poetry]

in #poetry8 years ago (edited)

I wrote this poem 6 years ago in 9th grade and recently added a couple more stanzas. Enjoy!

A crowd of beggars

Pocket Change

Alone on the streets
Beggars feed and feed
But in boxes
No shoes but socks
Rain clears the mind

Poor are the places
Where diners rest their heads:
A door of mâché
A house to stay
Pennies prickle the floor

Sun breaks and the work begins.
Shoes trample the ground.
Crowds of beggars pass
With coins, years to last
Together, the diners peer

Thoughts intrude the beggars’ minds
Of the diners’ needy eyes
But they're quick to stay
Pushed away
Rotten and forgotten

The diners look on
and hope to see a glimmer:
A comforting spark
A change of heart
A smile from the ungrateful

Alone on the streets
Beggars bleed and bleed
But in boxes
No shoes but socks
Rain clears the mind

We are the Beggars

My initial goal with this poem was to have "beggars" signify the common people (us) and "diners" signify homeless people/beggars. If you did not catch this on the first read though please read again to see if your understanding of it changes.
