Fortunes

in #poetry7 years ago

I envy the boy
Eating ice pops for breakfast
In an unmade bed
Smoking cigarettes
Squinting in the sun, passing time
While waiting for the world
To drag itself by him
Second by inch
For inspection
Licking at his feet
The ebb of a stream
Somewhere in the forest
Where the kids get high
Far away from their parents
Who were there years ago

But not him
He vomits only truth

Or a close truth
Truth that his decaying eyes
Unfold to him
Like the fortune game
She played with him
When they were in grade school
But she and the paper are gone
Now, gone
And he doesn't for a moment
Bother to reflect
On where she is
Or what fortunes she's telling
Nowadays.
