RE: REAL Poker Strategy For Novice Players From a Perennial Shark; What You Should Do Before You Ever Sit Down At A Table

in #poker8 years ago

I missed this the first time around, but this has a lot of good basic advice for beginners playing in casinos.

My uncle was also a professional poker player, albeit he played stud and LHE in the 80s and 90s. When I was building my bankroll online and before I ever stepped foot in a casino he gave me a lesson, letting me read some of his detailed notes on how to play. These were not direct playing strategy advice (given he played stud/LHE and I play PLO/NL), but a sort of check list of things he did when he played that I should think about before I sit down at a table.

This was roughly 10 years ago, but I recall a few of the things he mentioned to me:

  1. Play within your means and have money behind so that you can reload if you lose what's in front of you.
  2. Ask your neighbors if they chop when it folds to the sb so that issues don't arise later with someone getting dealt a playable hand and changing his mind.
  3. Don't slowroll people, don't string bet, don't hit and run.
  4. Learn proper etiquette to avoid angle shooting or rubbing people the wrong way.
  5. Be careful when looking at your hand, don't expose it so people can see what you have.

The process of stepping foot into a casino can be daunting for first timers. Important they get instructed how to go to the cage and get money, how to pick tables, and everything you mentioned above.
