Roe vs. Wade is the Supreme Court case that declared abortion legal by the U.S. Constitution, and therefore overturned the state specific legislation that had been in place prior to the ruling. The case was originally a lawsuit against the state of Texas. The plaintiff, Roe, was suing for what she claimed were unconstitutionally vague laws that prohibited abortion except in the case of saving the life of the mother.
