RE: The argument for Universal Healthcare while abolishing minimum wage

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

Lots of countries have universal health care and a much better minimum wage than the states ... the two really aren't mutually exclusive!

The gap between US Doctors and unskilled workers is ridiculous - this is due to a private health system and a low minimum wage. Minimum wages are in place because Employers can't be relied upon to do the right thing and people who are desparate for work are in no position to negotiate. Shit, I am a professional who dictates my own rates - rate discussions are still a fine balancing act.

I fail to see any argument for removing the minimum wage ... Employers are just going to magically start doing the right thing because they no longer have to make a piss weak effort at doing the right thing?

Sort:

There's also a lot of wage theft that occurs with unskilled work. Skim a few minutes off the time cards, or pay people under the table and pay them less, or try to skirt their way out of paying overtime.

I definitely agree there's nothing to prove most companies can be trusted to pay without a mandated minimum.

Yeah exactly, if people are desperate then it is much easier to exploit them. If you have no savings or skills, you are much less likely to cause a stink over not getting entitlements like overtime.

It’s more of a compromising suggestion.

universal health care is govt health care and hasn't worked any where it is tried.
High minimum wage leads to high unemployment in the youth and unskilled people and there would need to have a State, if your Constitution allows it. It is unconstitutional and every State/City has different costs of living and so there should be State minimum wage

govt health care ... hasn't worked any where it is tried.

Are you for real mate? Do you have a source for that claim?

Works fine in Aus, Canada, UK, Scandinavia etc etc etc

The US has the worst health care system in the developed world, that's a fact. US gov only spends ~20% less than Canada per-capita, yet you get sweet fuck all for your 80 cents.

Think about that for a second ...

Wasting your time with Bonner @bulleth... Take a look through his comments - you'll likely come to the same conclusion I did... He's delusional - but we have a lot of them now days...

Thanks Dave, very refreshing. I'll take your word on the comments section as lines up with my initial assessment and I'm worried reading tripe leads to brain damage. Now following.

He actually coined this and unfortunately he's suffering with a terminal case of... Trump Derangement Syndrome...

My personal biases lean in the complete opposite direction - at least i'm aware of them though...

Word, I am definitely biased politics wise, but that's why I like the economic side of these debates ... either your arguments/beliefs match up with the data or they don't.

No sane economists are arguing for lower wage growth, no sane economists are talking about hyperinflation, there is overwhelming consensus that austerity damages economies. Pity there's still a massive disconnect between this new paradigm and politics/policy.
