RE: Could Hungary's Momento Park serve as a model for Confederate statues?

in #politics7 years ago

An interesting idea with a park like that! I do agree with @sireastbound that there is a risk of such park becoming a shrine and that the risk of violent confrontation is high. Maybe still not a bad idea. Would it be that much different to put statues in a museum? I guess that depends on how access to the park is controlled.

@sireastbound does make a good point. There is always a risk for such a site becoming a holy site - just look at Hilter's birthplace - however I believe this could be mitigated. Momento Park is actually an open-air museum with controlled access not a true public park. Admission supports the museum's educational and culture events and the general mission of educating the public about the horrors of dictatorship.

Thanks for filling in about the access to Momento Park and clarifying that it is an open-air museum. If it is handled like that I think it could be a viable solution also for the US. There would still be all the same trouble in moving monuments from their original location to a Momento type park.

I've updated the original post to specific it is, indeed, an open air museum. Thanks for prompting me.
