Saudi Arabia looks like a grand-strategy game player. They are the new Saddam regime of the Middle east.
And don't forget that they have been funding Syrian rebels from the start. Maybe they just want to eliminate the competition?
It´s much more complex than this. Qatar has been supporting Syrian rebels as well. I think it´s more like Qatar has more independant foreign policy and lately they started to warm up their relations with Iran and Russia and the saudis don´t like that but of course we can only speculate on this until we have more information.
