RE: Is It Better to Starve?

in #politics8 years ago

I enjoyed this post, but as a "producer" (I own a small business), I think you may have this understanding a little off:

From the perspective of the producer, scarcity is desirable.

For me, it's not "scarcity" that is desirable, but meeting real human needs in a way that isn't currently being met by the market. You may think that's a semantic difference, but I see it as a significant one. I enjoyed Peter Thiel's book Zero to One because he highlights the benefits of natural monopolies. If you're providing a service to consumers at such an amazing level there's no waste or room for someone else to join that market, they are then free to go create a brand new market and meet new needs which benefit humanity. The moment someone is wasteful, they are replaced by some other actor who can do things more efficiently at a better price and quality (assuming no protectionism). To paint producers as simply working to secure scarcity puts a lot of this post into a false dichotomy situation (IMO) when there are really many types of producers taking many different angles on how to best meet the needs of consumers in the marketplace.

Either way, it's refreshing to see more than just a "Grrrr Capitalism BAD! Grrrr" post. :)
