My thoughts on this news
Do my eyes and ears deceive me, are the Democrats actually doing what the majority of Americans want....? Well it is about time, this is a good first step but we need more. The war on drugs has been a failure for the last 40+ years. We need to legalize all drugs and they need to be taxed and regulated just like tobacco and alcohol. Too many Americans are in jail for minor drug crimes and the American tax payers pay too much money to keep fighting a pointless war that will never end. By legalizing all drugs the US government would bankrupt every single drug cartel in a single day.
When the people wake up and shout at politicians the politicians have to listen, Trump's corruption has woken up sleeping Americans, everyone needs to vote to change this corrupt system and stop electing politicians who are bribed by corporate interests...
Creeps like Jeff Sessions want to keep the drug war going because it's a great way to lock up minority offenders and then deny them the right to vote. The drug war is a cultural war. Then again I am slightly worried about all the stoned dudes with guns .. but now that I think about it, maybe they'll chill a bit more. : ) Another issue is restitution, which will never happen .. but if they are decriminalizing now, what was it all for? Hundreds of thousands of people paid fines for petty offenses, non-violent crimes related to possession .. they should have their money back and people who were jailed over drug charges should have their records cleared at the very least .. while we're at it, the Voting Rights Act needs to be resuscitated and given teeth .. stop denying prisoners the right to vote, especially these primitive states who deny former prisoners the right to vote. It's pure racist politics.
Yes, the entire war on drugs is a scam, it keeps the population segregated and the poor in jail so they can't vote. The only ones who benefit from the war on drugs are the drug cartels and the US government creating pointless jobs to keep fighting the war on drugs. While American tax payers keep paying for a war that will never end...
The white supremacist power base ie the GOP benefit from the drug war. They are afraid of change, that's what it means to be "conservative" and they would rather live in a prison industrial complex threatening half the population with incarceration than open their hearts and minds to change for the better. So we are held hostage by their fear of the future. America is a conservative country ... but change is going to happen whether they like it or not, so we must try to ensure it changes for the better. I'm glad Schumer is pushing for this bill, but why doesnt he have a great bill to push every few days. There's so much to talk about and he is in a position to do it and yet they sit cautiously weighing every move, afraid to upset the donor class.
