No Bird Brain: Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Here is my entry into the Power House Creatives Contest, "I Spy With My Little Eye" by @zord189.

The prompt - I spy with my little eye something..... RED!

Criteria :

  • Take a photo of something red.
  • Write about that object/person/etc
  • Entry must not be less than 350 words cause who knows, you might get curie or ocd :)
  • Add a nice title to your entry.

Looking out my kitchen window I spy with my little eye something red. It’s the ruby-throated hummingbird at the feeder. These tiny birds are always a delight to see.

The one with the red feathers on the throat is the male while the less colorful one is the female.

Here is the female about to land on her red feeder.

I don’t know a whole lot about hummingbirds except there are two, sometimes three, that come to my two red feeders every spring.

The beautiful ruby-throated male uses the feeder at the front of the house and the female feeds at the one on the back deck. Must be the birds that don’t feed together, stay together.

They stay until fall and make the long trip to the warmer southern climates. I worry about them being so small and there would be all kinds of obstacles that could do them in ~ I’m thinking of airplanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and all sorts of extreme weather.

Usually they arrive back in Prince Edward Island on the May long weekend. If I haven’t put the feeders out then the male will hover by the kitchen window so I will see him.

These cute little birds must have a big brain as they can reason that I am the one that puts the feeders up. They have a great memory to come back to the same feeders every year.

Some things to do for the hummers:

  • It’s important to have a pesticide free lawn with flowers and scrubs for them to draw nectar.

  • Don’t use the red dye sold in stores for the feeder or put honey in the feeder.

  • Recipe for feeder:1 cup white sugar to 4 cups clean water. I dissolve the sugar in a little boiled water first to kill any bacteria. You can boil all the water to use but make sure you cool it before setting it outside.

Location: Prince Edward Island, Canada

All photos are mine.

Great hummer photos and your care tips are perfectly spot on! My hummingbirds have to share one feeder! Yours are really living first class!

Thanks Melinda @melinda010100. They are spoiled having the two feeders but is so I can see them when I sit/look out on either deck.

That must be something to look forward to. I haven't seen hummingbird yet for we don't have that here in our part of the globe. The closest I can relate it too is our sunbirds.
