A Single Seed: Observing the Ordinary
Our lives are pretty mundane right now. No gyms, restaurants, or get-togethers besides with the people you live with. This means it can be pretty easy to fall victim to doing the same thing over & over again at home. Schedules are beneficial, especially in a time like this to keep us focused, but they can also make us less aware of the present moment. I'm sure we've all fallen victim to those times when we find ourselves operating completely on autopilot, ended up driving halfway to work without thinking or scrolling through social media on our phones for minutes before actually realizing what we're looking at. Especially in times like this, I encourage you to try something new.
Change something small in one of your daily tasks.
For me, this has been as simple as stepping out of the shower with the opposite leg that I normally use. Or using my left hand to season the meal that I'm making. Tiny things, but things that bring our focus to now. Things that cultivate our presence. Our brains are used to doing everything in a certain way, but when we make even a minute switch into how we perform a daily task, it feels completely different. This is mindfulness at its finest. Being present, being aware, being alive.
See what you can make new again in your day tomorrow. The little switch in your routine that will get your neural pathways firing. Finding ways to exercise is crucial right now, but make sure you don't forget about your brain. The strongest muscle in our bodies deserves all the attention we can give it.
"A Single Seed" is my attempt to get out one idea every day that I've learned or accumulated over the years, with the hope that it may stick in someone else's memory bank as well. The idea may be related to fitness, business, life, or philosophy, but I think you'll find that many can change domains if you wish them to. With each seed planted, a new life awaits.
