A project too far (Vw Mk1 caddy)
So about 3 years ago, I had the urge to do something that I’ve always wanted to do, buy a mk1 vw caddy pickup, to restore, for some Simon time. A friend whom worked at a garage had spotted it on the internet, mentioned it to me, and within a few hours I had finished work, Hitched up my trailer and driven out to meet the previous owner. They’d owned it for around 4 months, and realised it was a larger undertaking that they realised.
It was loaded, and returned back home temporarily, before moving (on my daily commute) to my friends garage.
It was put to the back for a few months, as I researched exactly what I wanted to do with the caddy.
A couple of weekends saw the caddy emptied, cleaned and spare parts listed, with a larger parts list.
Some parts bought, other added to the wish list, I started on making a jig, to enable me to roll the vehicle over, in order to work all over the project.
Work then got in the way for the next few months, but a couple of productive weekends again saw a little progress, stripping and sorting parts to be refurbished, or renewed and then reattached.
Plans then took a twist, and my friend had received the offer of a much better location from which to base his business from, and he deceived to take them up on it. However this was crippleing news for me, as it meant that I had lost my storage for my project.
A few nights pondering, planning my next move saw me list the caddy speculatively at double the price I paid for it, hoping that In the meantime I would be able to source some new storage.
What I didn’t expect was for 3 offers of the asking price to come in with an hour of listing the caddy, meaning that within a week of listing it, it had gone.
Really wished I could have found some space, I know since that it’s current condition would have fetched even more, it was a good investment at the time, was fun to get my hands on and to have some focus away from home and work.
Oh well, I’ll continue looking for it’s replacement
