The task of the prophet: Jeremiah, I have made you a tester of metals, that you may determine the quality of my people. Jeremiah 6:27

The Book of Jeremiah in the Bible shows with the oracles of this famous major prophet what the spiritual task of a prophet consists of.
The Kingdom of Israel with its capital Samaria had been devastated by the Assyrians, and only the Kingdom of Judah remained, which was threatened by the advance of the Babylonian empire. Many thought at that time that the Kingdom of Judah could maintain its independence through a policy of alliances, as for example, with the Kingdom of Egypt.
And this is where Jeremiah's task began, because the first task of a prophet is to teach and when it is also necessary to admonish or warn; the prophet warned that the Israelites should first of all to trust in God and not in men, that is why the people that God had chosen to make his pact had to make a true conversion and this is what he expressed in a parable about the two sisters.
The prophet after the parable taught about the importance of the path of righteousness, the path that God had taught the Israelites with his law:
"Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
as where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls" Jeremiah 6:16.
This is why a prophet is largely a tester of minds and hearts, the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) and the hardness of heart are before the judgment of a prophet:
"Jeremiah, I have made you a tester of metals,
that you may determine the quality of my people" Jeremiah 6:27.
But a prophet, in addition to being a teacher of the law of God, is also a spiritual sentinel, which is why a prophet must also reveal the hidden things of God.
And so Jeremiah announced God's judgment on the Kingdom of Judah:
"I am bringing disaster on this people,
the fruit of their schemes,
because they have not listened to my words
and have rejected my law" Jeremiah 6:19.
Jeremiah's actions demonstrated the importance of prophetic activity in a nation, because as the book of proverbs teaches: "When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild" Proverbs 29:18.
