Are You STILL Afraid of The Dark ?
Humans are coward for the most part or we're just built that way. As tough as we might think we are, we are afraid of countless things. It ranges from fear of spiders, clowns, deep sea to even Kim K's fake butt. The most common fear we all share is darkness, also known as nyctophobia. Remember as kids, when we would turn off the lights on ground floor and immediately sprint upstairs like our lives on the line. Even in adulthood, most people are still frighten to be left alone in the dark. I'm not going to deny that I am still afraid.
Our imagination goes wild when there's no visual sensory input. Hey, in other news we are creative and imaginative! It's not the darkness that we afraid but the possibilities of what's hiding in it. When we can't see, we tend to fill our minds with the negatives first. You don't look into darkness and think of Jesus right? Perhaps in your prayers but not what it represents. The subconscious mind has been storing association of darkness with negative being such as monsters and demons.
The explanation for our irrational fear is human's DNA has been hard-coded since the beginning of time. Genetically speaking, we are programmed with hunter's instinct due to protecting from dangers during night time. Nocturnal predators are known to attack when we're most vulnerable and it happens to be our sleeping hour. Triggered by natural instinct which is why are constantly in anxiety and on vigilant mode. The defense mechanism activates, reacting to every movement and sound nearby. Think of this as a blessing than a curse since we're more aware of our surrounding. People who are not afraid of the dark are probably less responsive when it comes to danger. Most violent crime happens at night too which I am sure you know.
Sometimes we can't blame ourselves as to why we have fears. Now you can ponder upon inherited DNA. It is not the end having nyctophobia, hypnotherapy would do the trick. Maybe the next time, reprogram yourself to think unicorn and fairies when switching off the lights.
