Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

What's tennis elbow? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.

Tennis elbow is also known as lateral epicondylitis. Tennis elbow refers to the pain and discomfort that arises from the overuse of the muscles and tendons in your forearm. This strain usually occurs where these muscles attach to the bony bump on the outside of your elbow, which can lead to inflammation and pain.

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on the side of the elbow
There is pain when touching or twisting. and when lifting heavy things
Wrist and arm muscles become weak from repetitive use.

Types

There are two types of tennis elbow accurs:

  • Acute Tennis Elbow
  • Chronic Tennis Elbow

How would you diagnose a tennis elbow? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

When it comes to diagnosing tennis elbow, healthcare professionals typically start with a thorough assessment. While most cases of tennis elbow can be diagnosed through history-taking and physical examination alone, sometimes imaging tests are warranted.

1. X-rays

Though not particularly useful for diagnosing tennis elbow directly (since it’s more about tendon damage), X-rays can help rule out other conditions like fractures or arthritis.

2. MRI Scans

If your doctor suspects more severe damage or if conservative treatments aren’t working, they might recommend an MRI. This imaging test provides detailed pictures of soft tissues and can show any tears in the tendons.

3. Ultrasound

This is another option that some practitioners use to visualize tendon issues in real-time.

Also in physiotherapy, some special tests to confirm the diagnosis.

  • Cozen's Test
  • Mills Test
  • Maudsley's Test
  • Resisted Wrist Extension Test
  • Middle Finger Test

Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practicing preferably gifs or videos.

Ball Squeezing

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Choose Your Ball: Make sure it’s soft enough to squeeze but firm enough that you feel some resistance.

  2. Get Comfortable: Find a quiet spot where you can focus without distractions. I sat down on the bench.

  3. Squeeze Away: Holding a soft ball in one hand, I squeezed the ball as hard as I could for about 5 seconds, then relaxed for 5 seconds. Rinse and repeat! To keep things interesting, I switched hands after every set.

  4. Repetitions: Aim for 10-15 squeezes per hand at first. Over time, as your strength improves, you can increase the reps.

Finger Stretch

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Placing elbow on table: I sat on a bench or stool near a table, resting my elbow on the table, palm facing up.

  2. Folding fingers: Then I folded my fingers so that they were stretched, and after five seconds I lifted them up again.

  3. Streching nails: Similarly, I stretched by folding my nails and folding all the bolts of my fingers..

  4. Repetitions: Aim for 10-15 streaches per hand at first and then next.

Wrist Flexors Stretch

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Stand and spread hands: To practice this, stand and extend both arms forward..

  2. Streaching Wrist: Hold one hand straight with the palm facing up and curl the palm backward with the other hand.

  3. Wrist Stretch: After five seconds of bending, the wrist should straighten and then return to the original position..

  4. Repetitions: Aim for 10-15 squeezes with one hand at first, and then do with next hand.

Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient.

I work on the computer for a long time and do housework, so I always have pain in my hands, especialy on my right hand even when I rest. After doing these exercises, I feel less pain, and my hands feel like they have recovered.

Since starting this stretching routine, I’ve noticed several benefits:

  1. Reduced discomfort: My wrists feel less tense after long periods of typing.
  2. Improved Flexibility: Over time, I've gained more range of motion in my wrists.
  3. Enhanced Focus: Taking those few minutes away from screens allows me to clear my mind and return refreshed.

I would like to invite

Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.

Observations

Task 1 (2.5/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about tennis elbow, its symptoms, but didn't add cause, it's types. You add few causes but it would be better to add more explanation. A bit more depth require to complete the answer. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2.6/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination, history taking, special tests and investigations. It would be better to add explanation of special tests. Good.

Task 3 (3.9/4)
You try the finger stretches, wrist flexor stretch, ball squeezing. You did the finger stretches, ball squeezing, and wrist flexor stretch correctly. It would be better to add the gifs or videos while performing these exercises. Always remember to apply heat pack in chronic condition and ice pack in acute condition before performing exercises to relax the muscles and reduce stiffness. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from tennis elbow or any type of wrist. Thank you.

Dear Ma'am
I thought you added a lot to this discussion. You have said everything correctly from covering the exercises and their advantage. Such knowledge about tennis elbow is something we can think over for ourselves or refer to when someone we know has it.

¡Holaaa amiga!🤗

  • You have highlighted the problem due to typing, for me it was difficult to write on pen when I was stuck to keyboard.
  • These exercises are better for our arm and hands to release the discomfort from it.
