QT-wallet error that could make you loose cryptocoins
Hi fellow Cryptolovers,
I would like you all to take some time to read this. It might save you from losing your precious cryptocoins.
I installed a few QT-wallets during my time in cryptoworld and all went fine untill some weeks ago.
It came to my attention that certain wallets do not allow you to dump your private key, the key you need to restore your wallet and get back the coins that are linked to your address.
This issue makes me think that there are some versions of the QT-wallet, holding this bug/error and got spread out. Addresses without private key cause a problem when trying to send out coins from that wallet.
These are a few error you might see when trying to dump that key or trying to sent out coins.
"Private key for address ADDRESS is not known (code -4)" (when dumping private key)
"Error: Transaction Creation Failed" (when sending out coins)
This said, here are some tips you should do BEFORE you start receiving coins on those wallets.
- after installing your wallet > go to "help" > "Debug console" and type "dumpprivkey" followed by the address from your wallet. Save the private key & store it in a save place.
NOTE : if you cannot dump the private key for that address, try creating a new address and dump the private key for the new one.. I suggest NOT to use the old address anymore, only use an address from which you own the private key - Protect your wallet with a passphrase, and keep this passphrase also stored somewhere, with all the passwords people have to remember, you might forget about some of them and lock yourself out of your wallet
- Backup your wallet.dat file (this one can be found in the "%appdata%" > "coinwallet folder"
- If it's possible to create a paperwallet for the coin, DO IT
At this time me and some other cryptolovers are trying to figure out any way possible what the reason of this issue is and how to solve it, but for now.. be warned
note: if there are people who are familiar with this bug and know how to solve it, please do not hesitate to reply on this thread. You might be helping out a lot of people who encountered this problem.
