Poverty

in #quotes7 years ago (edited)

Poverty only dishonours when it is a sign of laziness.

When honesty and poverty come together, they find themselves so well together that they do not want to separate.

If in poverty one does not envy the position of the richest, one will not, in fortune, be proud of his own greatness. If in fortune one never turns one's eyes from the most unfortunate, one will never be defeated in the face of adversity.

Poverty is not vice wo is the beggar who said this nonsense?

The happiest situation for the happiness of our days is that which takes us away as much from the movements attached to the great wealth as from the pains arising from poverty.

Poverty often preserves us from many evils.

Greatness has only false attractions, and poverty is not painful, as it is believed.

In this world, cold poverty is condemned to arouse suspicion.

Poverty is the object of the reproaches of our enemy, the disdain of our best friends and dearest relatives.

The happiness that comes after affliction is like the lamp that shines in the darkness of night, but the man who, from opulence, falls into poverty, though still human in form, is no longer that a lifeless body.

If poverty is added to dishonor, it becomes more difficult to bear.

Careless poverty is preferable to opulence.

Poverty easily attracts contempt. However truthful the poor man may be, who complains of the wrongs which have been done to him, we always believe that what he says of it is to bring our sensibility into play.

Poverty knows its wounds, but it has privileges that it does not know.

Poverty always lays contempt in its train.

Have mercy on poverty and impoverishment.

Poverty often weighs, with umbrage, the respect it receives.

Wealth does not know how to humiliate poverty.

Love and Poverty rarely travel together. Though neighbors, they are but little friends; the former nevertheless readily indicates the dwelling of the second, and sometimes even has the complaisance to lead them.

Feel the need of virtue, the poverty of the soul is worse than that of fortune.

Poverty is a burden that drags us painfully where others fly, and tackle where they sail full sails.

Poverty has its openness: opulence has its embarrassment.

Avarice begins where poverty ceases.

Poverty always goes on at the tail of the poor.

Who is dragged in the chariot of hope to poverty for companion.
