You hit it on the head! I've always felt reading helps with writing, especially because, like Mark Twain talked about, you'll read something and then your brain will subconsciously store bits it liked (like short sentences or big paragraphs) and avoids the things you don't like (big sentences, teeny paragraphs), that way, you build your writing "wall."
Also, if you are familiar with what kinds of things are liked and published now, that can mold how you write to meet up with the general expectation of "good" writing!
